Scope and content
┆Personal papers of David Clark consisting of photographs of patients and staff at Fulbourn Hospital alongside Clark's personal research and diaries. Also include are a small collection of publications from Clark's personal library.
History
David Clark was born in London in 1920. He attended Kings College Cambridge to study medicine but completed his studies at Edinburgh University Medical School. He qualified in 1943 and immediatly signed up to serve as a Medical Officer in the 6th Airborne Division. His duties took him to France, Germany, Sumatra (Indonesian) and Palestine. During the war he had developed an interest in psychiatry and returned to train at the Royal Edinburgh and Maudsley Hospitals. In 1953 he was appointed Medical Superintendent of Fulbourn Hospital Cambridge. He initiated a radical programme of change at the hospital, opening locked wards and establishing a therapeutic community. He remained at the Fulbourn until his retirement in 1983. He was a founding member of the Cambridge Group Work which in turn established the Clark Lecture to commenorate his pioneering work in the field of psychiatry. Clark pass away in Mar 2010 aged 89
