History
HM Prison Grendon in Buckinghamshire opened in 1962. It is the UK’s only fully therapeutic prison with five communities and an assessment unit. Each unit is a democratic therapeutic community where group based therapy is used to address risk factors and offending behaviours. Prisoners serving indeterminate sentences apply to be transferred to Grendon with the specific aim of addressing emotional diffculties, personality disorders, sexual abuse trauma and substance misuse. The prison aims to promote a social climate which facilities positive relationships, personal responsibility and social participation. Prisoners are encouraged to have shared responsibility for day to day decision making and problem solving.
