**Biographical summary**: David Clark qualified as a Doctor in 1943 and immediately signed up to serve as a Medical Officer in the 6th Airborne Division. During the war he had developed an interest in psychiatry and returned to train at the Royal Edinburgh and Maudsley Hospitals. In 1953 he was appointed Medical Superintendent of Fulbourn Hospital Cambridge. He initiated a radical programme of change at the hospital, opening locked wards and establishing a therapeutic community. He remained at the Fulbourn until his retirement in 1983.
